HSBC Grabs Citi Banker
By Scott Krady
7 Aug 2008
HSBC Securities hired Evan Hazell, a top energy investment banker, to be a managing director in its Calgary office, reports the Globe and Mail. Hazell leaves Citigroup, which had scaled back plans to expand its energy coverage because of the credit crisis. Before joining Citi, Hazell worked at Harrison Lovegrove, an advisory firm specializing in energy, and RBC Dominion Securities.

Hazell is one of several new additions at HSBC, which has used cutbacks at other firms to strengthen its team. Recently, it named Matthew Bosrock as deputy chief executive officer, and hired Jame Hubbs from TD Securities as its new head of debt capital markets.

Hazell's stint at Citigroup lasted less than a year. He was brought on to lead the bank's increased coverage of Canadian energy companies. But Citi's looming losses cut short those plans.
